Signs It's Time to Replaster Your Pool 🏊♀️🛠️
Replastering isn't cheap, so you want to do it right when it's actually needed — not too early, not too late (aka not after it's leaking). Here's how to know.

If you're seeing rough texture, stains that won't come out, or visible cracks — it's time to start planning. Don't wait for a leak.
🔍 The Tell-Tale Signs
Rough or bumpy texture Run your hand along the wall. If it feels like sandpaper instead of smooth, the plaster is breaking down.
Stains that scrubbing won't fix A little discoloration is normal. Deep, blotchy staining that stays after brushing and balancing chemicals means the surface itself is compromised.
Visible cracks Small surface (crazing) cracks are cosmetic. Larger structural cracks are not — those need attention now, not later.
Chalky, flaky texture on your skin If you get out of the pool feeling like you rubbed against chalk, the plaster is deteriorating and releasing calcium.
Constantly fighting water chemistry If you're rebalancing constantly and it never seems to hold, aging plaster can be part of the problem.

⏳ What Happens If You Wait
Skipping replaster doesn't save you money — it just delays the bill and adds zeros to it.
- Rough/chalky plaster gets worse. More calcium leaches out, water feels harsher, skin and swimsuits take more wear.
- Gunite gets exposed. Once plaster thins out enough, the rough concrete underneath (and eventually rebar) is exposed — that's when people start actually getting scraped up getting in and out.
- Cracks turn into leaks. Structural cracks let water migrate behind the shell. This is the expensive turn — a planned replaster becomes an unplanned leak + structural repair.
- Equipment pays the price too. Chronic chemistry imbalance from calcium leaching adds extra strain on pumps, heaters, and salt cells.
Bottom line: replaster now is a planned cost. Replaster-plus-leak-detection-plus-structural-repair later is not — and it costs a lot more.

One or two signs? Keep an eye on it. Three or more? Time to get a real inspection before it turns into a bigger (and pricier) repair.
